New York City may have its Rockefeller Christmas tree and all, but the City of Fort Lauderdale has no reason to be envious. With the marvelous ten-week celebration of glistening holiday lights and garlands known as Light Up Lauderdale, our town has its own rightful celebratory holiday seasonal gem.
Presented by Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale and the City of Fort Lauderdale, this free holiday fete is in its sixth year and will light up the two-and-a-half-mile brick Riverwalk pathway on both sides of the New River. Be there this Thursday when the switch gets flipped on at the grand kickoff party, aptly titled “Get Lit.” This free event welcomes a guest of honor — Santa Claus, of course — and will feature a 65-piece orchestra playing everyone’s favorite holiday tunes. Also on the agenda is a minitrain that will run from Esplanade Park along the Riverwalk and back; there will also be vendors, face-painting, and crafts for children of all ages.
This sensational holiday kickoff takes place Thursday at 6 p.m. at Esplanade Park (400 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale). Visit goriverwalk.com, or call 954-468-1541.

Thu., Nov. 13, 6 p.m., 2014
