Marvin Dixon was born in Illinois and spends
some of his time in Georgia, but when it
comes down to it, he’s South Florida all the
way. The popular performer and comedic
host has been at it since ’94 and has aligned
himself with some of the biggest names
in main-event stage shows, like Zo’s Summer
Groove, and numerous entities like
HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, BET, and The Tom
Joyner Sky Show. As a comedian, Dixon is
no hack, but his greatest
strength comes in promotion,
and he knows when
to take the back seat.
And there ain’t a better
back seat in the car than the
one behind Cocoa Brown — a comedian with
street sass and a master’s in education in case
you have some “back talk” in you. Her name
might elicit comfy thoughts of warm wintertime
treats, but this Cocoa is nothing but
an acerbic fount of topical comedy that’s as
informed and intelligent as it’s church-going
polite and grown-folks-time sexy. She might
be criminally underused in Hollywood, but
truth is Hollywood just can’t handle a woman
who’ll tell Tinseltown where to park it.
Go ahead and get told where you can
either (a) park it or (b) sit in it when Cocoa
Brown stars in Marvin Dixon’s Christmas
Spectacular at 7 p.m. Friday at the
Improv, 5700 Seminole Way, Fort Lauderdale.
Tickets cost $20, and there’s a
two-drink minimum. Call 954-981-5653,
or visit ftl.improv.com.
