Miss Vicky Keller has given much of her life to the local gay
community. The straight mother of three — and surrogate mother to
many gay men cast out by their families — founded a lesbian choir and
an ’80s anti-AIDS organization. She notarized the first domestic
partnership in Broward County, marched against Anita Bryant, organized
letter campaigns, and has served on the board of Pride South Florida
for more than 30 years — and that’s only a partial rundown of her
pro-gay activism. Now, this veritable godmother to gays is in need of
support herself. With Keller facing financial catastrophe after a
heart attack and the alleged theft of thousands of dollars by an
ostensible friend whom she housed, the Rising Action Theatre (Sunshine
Cathedral, 1480 SW Ninth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) is sponsoring a
cabaret fundraiser for her featuring ten performers, a dress-and-look-
like-Miss-Vicky contest, a door raffle, a silent auction, a cash bar,
and hors d’oevres. The night also doubles as Keller’s 85th birthday
party. Help make it a fabulous one.
The Gala Birthday Benefit happens Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $49.95. Proceeds go to Keller and the theater. Call
