The Heavy Pets are that rarest of all Floridian bands — a group that, in trying to make it big, moved to, not away from, Fort Lauderdale. Its loose, inoffensive jam-band sound (and Deadesque absence of a really compelling lead singer) masks a knack for chunky pop hooks and smart, tricky songcraft. When they’re not noodling, they sound a little like mid-period Elvis Costello, just stoned-er. Which is a good thing. For the past three years, the Heavy Pets have been approximately everywhere on the festival circuit, and for New Year’s, they’re coming home to the Culture Room. Expect New Year’s-like party favors, pretty noise, and chill vibes.
