It’s a tale as old as a bad E! reality-TV script: Entitled rich woman’s plans for remarriage foiled when hardheaded but passionate ex-husband shows up days before the wedding with a posse of tabloid reporters and forces her to rethink everything she thought she knew about love and [insert dramatic pause here] herself.
If it sounds familiar, it’s not because it’s a Kardashians recap but the makings of the 1940 classic Broadway-play-turned-blockbuster-movie The Philadelphia Story. In it, Philadelphia socialite Tracy Lord (played by Katherine Hepburn) is finally getting over her divorce from hard-partying but endearing C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) by settling for safe-yet-boring businessman George Kittredge, who worships the polished hardwood floors she walks on. But Lord doesn’t want to be worshiped; she wants to be loved by a partner who can match her expertly in bitter jabs and smart-ass comebacks.
And isn’t that what true love is all about? Tonight, Phillip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story returns to the stage in all its nostalgic glory as Arts Garage Radio gives it the classic-radio-show treatment (scripts are adapted from classic movies and performed live in homage to the heyday of radio days, with performers using specially designed sound-effects devices).
