The Jackhammer is a gay bar (attached to a “video lounge”/dance club called Steel), and it caters more to the leather than the chiffon crowd. It is a fun, unpretentious, self-assuredly non-descript place, dark and unburdened by the will of any flamboyant interior decorator. What atmosphere it possesses has always been derived at least in part from the fashion decisions of its clientele: baseball caps, Stetsons, some work boots, some sneakers, and plenty of flannel. It is a serious place for serious men, out to do some serious drinking while enjoying some serious sexiness. Until Friday, that is — then, the flannel comes off, as Jackhammer throws its Locker Room Underwear Party. Those in undies shall pay $4 for all domestic brews and well drinks (as well as $2 for El Presidentes), which ought to help ease the pain of tearing their thigh flesh from the oft-sticky seats. And when punters get drunk, other punters get cute, and tighty-whities grow tighter. At 1 a.m., just when they’re getting ready to burst at the seems, Jackhammer throws the nearly-nekkid on a stage and awards $100 to the lad with the cutest underoos.
Steel/Jackhammer is located at 1951 NW Powerline Road in Oakland Park. For more info, call 954-544-9985, or visit steelftl.com.
Fridays, 10 p.m. Starts: April 3. Continues through July 3, 2009
