If you went to school in the ’80s and ’90s, you know that gym class not only changed its name to P.E. but it also lost anything fun (read: dangerous or expensive) that schoolchildren used to be allowed to do. Activities were restricted to those that required the least amount of equipment and were the least lawsuity.
This birthed the great era of kickball. Originally invented to teach young children the mechanics of baseball, it was resurrected in the 1980s for the reasons stated above — and probably because it uses the same evil red sphere from dodgeball, thus causing those with dodgeball-related PTSD to flinch at the rubbery “ting” when they kick it, giving bitter gym teachers everywhere a good chuckle.
But you’re all grown up now, and if you’d like to indulge in a little nostalgia — or work through some lingering issues — head out to Markham Park (16001 W. State Road 84, Sunrise) at 1 p.m. Saturday to play a game. Park in the Safari Isle at the Oasis lot and look for a group of 25- to 45-year-olds called Sporting Out. They will be on the field breaking up into teams and taking their bases. It’s $1.50 per person to get into the park and another $1 per person donation to Sporting Out to help pay for the equipment. There’s no league to join, though they do ask that you register at meetup.com/sportingout, where you can also get more information about the group and its other activities, including dodgeball. (Did you flinch?)
