Lori Michaels, a devastatingly cute 30-something aspirant to pop stardom, is not the best reason to go to Pridefest ’09. Though she’s close. Michaels — a Jersey girl with a pre-law degree — combines everything that was ever cool about gaydom in a single, sexily androgynous package: hot techno beats, a dusky lesbionic singing voice, an excellent hairstyle, and an overactive social conscience (she still runs a nonprofit, Reach Out Inc., that she began as a 16-year-old). No, as compelling as she is, the real draw of Pridefest is this: the people who show up. We gay folk especially spend most of our lives wondering where the hell our community is at (and, no, the drunks on Wilton Drive do not count). Pridefest is a good answer.
Joining Lori Michaels onstage will be a dozen performers, from the hot (Richard Cortez, the acoustiqueer whiz-kid) to the hilarious (In Harmony, a community singing troupe that tends to be anything but), plus almost 300 vendors both in and out of the War Memorial Auditorium.
Pridefest runs Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. at the War Memorial Auditorium and Holiday Park at 730 N. Federal Hwy. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $5 to $8. For more info, visit pridesouthflorida.org.
