Maps to the Stars, the latest film from the cult director of subversive horror-drama David Cronenberg, paints a grim picture behind the veneer of celebrity in Hollywood. It follows a family of Hollywood archetypes disrupted by the appearance of an interloper (Mia Wasikowska) whose face and arms were mutilated by a childhood fire. She is Agatha, the sister of 13-year-old child star Benjie Weiss (Evan Bird), who is fresh out of rehab and hooked on energy drinks. His stage mother, Christina (Olivia Williams), pushes him to get back to work on a sequel to some schlocky comedy hit called Bad Babysitter 2. His father, Dr. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack), is a new-age guru who has his own TV show and offers private sessions that combine reflexology and Jungian psychoanalysis. In her quest to track down her family, Agatha takes a job as a “chore whore” for a washed-up actress (Julianne Moore playing a version of Lindsay Lohan creeping toward 50) and kindles a romance with an aspiring actor/writer surviving as a limo driver (Robert Pattinson). Already on home video in almost every country, Maps to the Stars has finally received a theatrical release in the United States. One has to wonder if the Hollywood satire hit too close to home.
