Anyone who grew up hanging out under Commercial Pier, around Villas, or at Second Street in Pompano during the late ’90s and ’00s knows Dutch, the scruffy, beach-blond manager of South Florida surf staple B.C. Surf & Sport. It’s not that we saw him at Commercial or Second Street. Instead, it was that B.C. served as sort of a hub for beach crawlers needing wax, a new board, a used board, shades, or shoes. If you were around, there was also good chance you or someone you knew participated in the shop’s Sunday morning summer surf lessons held at Villas by the Sea. Well, those lessons are still going strong over ten years later, surf conditions willing. The participants tend to skew younger, but the event is open to everyone and the lessons are free for all skill levels.

You won’t find warmer waters anywhere at 8 a.m., so jump in at Villas by the Sea, located 2 blocks north of Commercial Blvd. on A1A in Lauderdale By the Sea. Dutch and other qualified instructors from Hang Loose Surf School will coach participants. Call B.C. Surf & Sport at 954-564-0202 on Saturdays to confirm. For more information, visit hangloosesurfschool.com.

Sundays, 8 a.m. Starts: June 21. Continues through Sept. 27, 2009
