Some cinematic works just need to be dissected — and their appeal crosses every social divide. Take Taxi Driver, for instance. Nobody makes it through Film Appreciation 101 without studying its narrative thread; the movie is a cornerstone of academia.
But rich debate about this particular flick isn’t limited to film school campuses; it can also be found in those other cinematic epicenters — stoner’s living rooms. This is where the conversations get deep. “Dude, dude, this is totally the part where he’s gonna shave his hair into a Mohawk! I heard that DeNiro did that after he tripped on ’shrooms for like, two days, and that they filmed the scene while he was on his vision quest. This movie is cool, bro.”
Even Christians for social change discuss Taxi Driver, or at least they will tonight at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). The refashioned church-turned-cinema house is an oddly perfect location for Cinema Verite, a program sponsored by CityChurch of Fort Lauderdale. It might seem odd that Taxi Driver, which was almost released with an X rating in 1976 is now being presented by a religious organization. But CityChurch is youth-driven and it sees God’s truth expressed in many unconventional aspects of life: even in films about lone wolf taxi drivers-turned-assassins who frequent porn houses.
