As long as there have been people, there have been those who kick the crap out of other people. But even with this long history, and despite the recent occurrence of hard-core fighting championships, founder John Morrison and the other folks at USA Extreme Challenge couldn’t find a particular style that fit them. There was nothing to be done for it but make their own rules, open a school to train their own fighters, and then unleash them for paying audiences in fights that alternate styles between rounds — all sanctioned by the International Sport Karate Association, of course.
In other words, two guys come out and kick each other around with Thai kickboxing. The next round, they come out and hammer each other mercilessly with full-contact karate. Finally, the two fighters use submission grappling rules — perhaps the harshest of all — to squeeze the life out of an opponent and leave him twitching on the mat. Sounds fun, right?
A single fight night with USA Extreme Challenge guarantees at least a dozen moments wherein the entire crowd gasps or shouts when some poor shmuck takes a foot to the head or gets tossed halfway across the ring. Brutal, but entertaining.
This Friday, the USA Extreme Challenge comes to Omni Auditorium with several titles on the line, and these title fights use more specific rules than the general melee. In all, the night’s 14 fights include four title matches and Lord knows how many grievous injuries.
