Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, a replica of an open-air venue that burned down in 1614, is sponsoring nationwide screenings of Shakespearean flicks, and venues across Florida are participating. It all starts on Monday with a screening of The Merry Wives of Windsor, a comedy reputed as the only play in which Shakespeare tackled the Elizabethan middle class. It’s followed on August 1 by Henry IV Part 1, on August 18 by Henry IV Part 2, and on September 15 by Henry VIII, whose staging in 1614 with an actual canon for special effects ignited and burnt down the Globe. To be clear, the movie versions are not studio stuff: They’re taped live stagings of the plays at the reconstructed Globe involving Britain’s most sterling Shakespearean actors.
You can catch the shows at three Broward venues: Cinemark Paradise 24 (15601 Sheridan St., Fort Lauderdale), Cypress Creek Station 16 (6415 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale), and Magnolia Place 16 (9645 Westview Drive, Coral Springs). Each screening begins at 7 p.m., and tickets cost $15. Visit fathomevents.com.
