There’s nothing like a torrid love triangle to spice up a romantic comedy, but at some point you’ve got to draw the line. For instance, no one wants to see the romantic interchange between a guy, a girl, and a Tibetan monk. It’s just not that interesting: The monk just chants and shit and really wants nothing to do with either of them. How about a pizza boy, a buxom blonde, and an empty wallet? Oh, that’s been done before? Damn. Well, what if you’ve got a cute twenty-something who falls for a gorgeous young girl, who in turn is head-over-heels for her own dog? Then, let’s say the guy also falls in love with the dog, but has to feign affection for the girl in order to keep seeing the pooch! Why, that’s comic gold! It’s also the plot of the new flick, Heavy Petting, premiering Wednesday at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). The film’s stars — Kevin Sussman, Brendan Hines, and, most adorable of all, Casper the dog — will be mixing with moviegoers at the opening reception (to benefit the Humane Society, natch). The reception is at 6 p.m. sharp, and the film screens with the animated short, MasterPeer Theatre, at both 6 and 8. Tickets cost $20, or $8 for just the film.
