The predictions and consequences of global warming -- loss of fresh water, pollution of coastal communities, the deforestation of rainforests, and human overpopulation -- all run rampant in our media, regardless of whether we choose to pay attention. Unless we search hard for the truth, most of us are unaware that there is apparently one industry responsible for the majority of our environmental issues. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is the first environmental documentary that aims to falsify the claims of the livestock industry and share why its activities are causing the world's environmental problems. In fact, the creators of this film assert that they had to risk their own lives to expose the truth. The risk involved is so great that major environmental organizations do not dare to challenge the reach of this industry. The protagonist even interviews leaders of such organizations throughout the film, to uncover their negligence.
This may just be the film that makes you want to go vegan or, at the very least, to see what else you can do to make a difference without giving up beef. Since you won't find this movie in your everyday theater, Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale) is featuring this film on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A free postfilm reception will be held in the courtyard. Call 954-760-9898, or visit FLIFF.com. Tickets cost $11.
