A Spellbinding Musical

Most of us came of age during our collegiate years. Our twiggy limbs and bony hips grew fleshier than we would have liked, and our tongues became magically untied when flirting with the opposite sex. But then, we didn’t have green skin. Or sorcery skills. Or flying monkeys to contend with. What I’m saying here is that your college experience is inevitably different from that of Elphaba’s (AKA The Wicked Witch of the West), because if it weren’t, it’s doubtful that you would shell out between $30.50 and $153.50 per ticket to see Wicked.

This Broadway phenomenon tells the ever-so-true story of how Oz came to be – without Dorothy (or mostly, anyway), and it all started in witch school. Now here’s the part that you can relate to: In this university setting there are popular kids (Glinda) and terribly unpopular kids (Elphaba), and their respective social status locations are dictated in part by their physical appearance and in part by their upbringings. But from there, all bets are off. There’s a corrupt government to address, allegiances to form, and many, many songs to be sung. Can two young witches save Oz from itself? Will Glinda win homecoming queen? Will Elphaba ever get a boyfriend? You’ll have to go back to school and find out. Catch Wicked every day of the week except Mondays through April 4th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale).
