Art and Beer: A Splendid (Burp) Combination

Las Olas Boulevard will transform into a beer-soaked art fair this weekend. A hundred and fifty national artists are showing up on the drag with $15 million worth of juried art — to mark Oktoberfest. There will be both art booths and micro-brewed beer. What this means in practice is that you can get smashed like a good German whilst carefully appreciating paintings, sculptures, photos, glass, wood, jewelry, collage, and ceramics, all of which will be for sale.

Howard Allen Ltd., a Florida-based company running the show, has required that every artist be on hand at all times to answer questions from curious drunkards. So, hypothetically speaking, if you come across a portrait of Ayn Rand breast-feeding a litter of racoons and can’t get your head around it, just query the artist about his or her intent. Serious — meaning filthy-rich — art collectors will be enticed by $20,000 metal sculptures and the like; modest spenders can go home with neat trinkets like $25 handmade earrings. Remember, it’s Oktoberfest. Women, wear your dirndls. Men, don’t forget your xylophone. The 22nd Annual Las Olas Art Fair & Oktoberfest (600 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale) is today and again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Call 954-472-3755, or visit
