Be the Change

Each election year, young voters promise to engage in the political process far beyond the next four years. It comes just after the ballots are cast, and just before the contact high of enthusiasm wears off. But, like promises of pledging to NPR and avoiding drive-through food (damn you, egg McMuffins!), those resolutions dissolve unless you throw yourself into action. Keep your plans of community service in tact by visiting Planned Parenthood today during its Young Activist Advocacy Institute.

If you’ve always been partial to policies that involve comprehensive sex education, and the prevention of STD’s in conjunction with access to birth control, this free, comprehensive, one-day program could be for you. Young politically savvy types will learn how to impact public policy by learning tips on speaking to large crowds, community mobilizing, and working with elected officials. The program starts with breakfast at 10 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m. at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Call 561-472-9941, or visit ppsoflo.org or youngactivist.org to reserve a space.
