Beauty, Eh?

In an era of Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decisions, thigh-gap controversy, and Fox News reporters denying the “war on women,” it may be absolutely mind-boggling that here we sit, discussing an upcoming Miss Florida USA 2015 competition. But the pull toward this grown-ass-women version of Toddlers and Tiaras is strong, because these types of beauty competitions often offer women (who’ve won the genetic lottery, natch) a chance for scholarships, modeling contracts, endorsements, swag, and the possibility of a future career path. Take last year’s Miss Florida USA winner, Brittany Oldehoff. The FAU grad now graces the cover of GQ magazine and makes bank in a bathing suit, modeling during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Billed as “The Sunshine State’s path to the Miss USA National Program,” Miss Florida USA is in its 64th year and features 70 titleholders from Pensacola to the Florida Keys in all traditional areas of competition, like swimsuit, evening gown, and Q&A sessions. Past prizes for the winners have included a three-week all-expenses-paid trip to the national finals, acting lessons, Med Spa gift certificates, professional photography sessions, and interview coaching lessons. Take the money and run, ladies!
