Brand New Shoez

If you’re unfamiliar with the shoegaze genre, well you’re probably not alone. The movement peaked and pretty much ended in the early 1990s when most young kids were still listening to Nirvana’s Nevermind. Despite its underground fan base, pioneers of the sound like My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain have recently benefited from a popularity resurgence, and are even starting reunion tours to support their new found fans — a testament of how ahead of it’s time the music clearly was.

South Florida band, The Gray Girls, clearly adore the genre as well. Combining a wall of neo-psychedelic noise and soft vocal effects, the new group has gone to great lengths to capture the chaotic intensity that made the shoegaze sound so hypnotic in 1991. The band plans to release their first LP, Honey I, “soon,” and will be playing some warm-up shows to celebrate.

See this up-and-coming act at their live debut this Saturday at Radio-Active Records, located at 1930 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free, and the show starts at 8 p.m. Call 954-762-9488 for details.
