Butter Fly Free

What drew director Michael Leeds to the 1969 classic Broadway play Butterflies Are Free was not so much the sweet back-and-forth of a young blind man out living on his own for the first time and a liberated, free-thinking actress neighbor next door but the underlying lesson of how deceptive others' perceptions of people with disabilities can really be. "While the young man in the play is blind, his problem is not how he sees the world but rather how the world sees him," Leeds said in a statement. "The young man is far less handicapped than his mother, who is deaf to what her son really needs, and the young woman who starts out emotionally crippled but blossoms through their relationship." With Leeds' help, the performance that introduced Broadway crowds to Gwynnie's mom, Blythe Danner, and Goldie Hawn to teenaged boys everywhere in the film version will get a second life as it arrives at Broward Stage Door Theater for a run now through September 14. Leeds worked with Broward Stage Door Theatre Artistic Director Derelle Bunn to assemble a cast of local performers and actors from New York that includes Britt Michael Gordon in the role of Don Baker and Gina Marie Jamieson as Jill Tanner. Performances are at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at 8036 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs. Tickets cost $16 to $42. Call 954-344-7765, or visit stagedoortheatre.com.
