While May marks the beginning of blockbuster season, this Saturday marks the fourth time Underlab Studios has partnered with the Fort Lauderdale arthouse Cinema Paradiso for Auteur Explosion, a monthly showcasing of local filmmakers as well as local musicians, visual artists and performance artists. So before you waste $10 on whatever pseudo-science thriller you believe will help you escape your anxiety about the crappy state of the world (cough-Angels and Demons-cough), at least recognize some of those who are trying to galvanize and contribute to your local arts community. This Auteur Explosion will feature short films by Franco Parente (2008 winner for FLIFF Shorts), Fro Rojas, Tony Kapel, Chris Kennedy, and Jon Vinazza. Other entertainment highlights will include singer-songwriter Teri Caitlin, who’s been a steady presence on the South Florida music scene since the mid-’90s, and a four-minute performance by the Repo: The Genetic Opera shadowcast.

Support your local arts community on Saturday at 9 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE 6th St., Fort Lauderdale). It only costs $5. For more information call 954-525-3456, or visit fliff.com.
