Comic book fans are in for a rare treat this weekend when Tate's Comics brings in up-and-coming graphic comic book artist Vanesa Del Rey for an in-store signing session. Del Rey first raised eyebrows in the comics community with her poignant and darkly hued work on the crime drama series Hit, from noted graphic novel publishers Boom! Studios. Her work brims with seduction and intrigue, combining just the right amount of gore and sultry femmes fatales to a film noir narrative. For those wondering, the only thing this Cuban artist has in common with pop starlet Lana Del Rey is a seductive quality in their work, and that's it. Del Rey's appearance also coincides with Boom! Studio's newest miniseries, The Empty Man. This limited-run print tells the haunting tale of a new disease that causes hallucinations and suicidal dementia and quickly kills victims and the FBI and CDC agents who try to rid the world of it.
Meet the gifted artist this Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tate's Comics, located at 4566 N. University Drive in Lauderhill. Free admission. Visit tatescomics.com, or call 954-748-0181.
