Comic Relief

Every comedian has to start somewhere. In her autobiography, singer-pianist Nina Simone recalls that even Richard Pryor “shook like he had malaria, he was so nervous.” This past month, Improv Paradise Live has given local comedians a reason to be just as nervous as they compete for $300 and a guest set with another comedian at the club. Every session of New Faces of Comedy, which began on May 20, started off with a pool of 13 to 15 contestants, who, by the end of the night, had been whittled by the audience down to three. Now, nine of South Florida’s own will compete in the finals this Wednesday.

Head to Paradise Live to vote for the funnyman, or woman, of your choice and put the rest out of their misery. Paradise Live is located at 5700 Seminole Way in Hollywood. The show starts at 8 p.m., and admission costs $5. Call 561-833-1812, or visit
