Electronic Owls

Owl City is the kind of musical act that wouldn’t have existed just ten years ago. Adam Young began with a keyboard and laptop in his parents’ basement and gained notoriety as a synth-pop musician by adding songs to MySpace. In under two years, Young has gone from an unknown basement dweller to having a hit on the Billboard Top Ten. But indie reviewers like Pitchfork and Sputnik love to have a hate-on for Young and dubbed him a Postal Service rip-off. Young’s lyrics are about three levels of cheesy above Ben Gibbard’s, but there is still a sheen of dancy fun that will get the skinny-jean crowd jumping to his live show at Culture Room (3045 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale). Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets cost $14. Call 954-564-1074, or visit cultureroom.net.
