Fall-oween | Night & Day | South Florida | Broward Palm Beach New Times | The Leading Independent News Source in Broward-Palm Beach, Florida

Without a calendar, it’s difficult to mark the beginning of fall in South Florida. There is no sweater weather or pretty foliage. Commencement of football season arrives too soon to mark our seasonal blip. And the September equinox is only eventful because we get to doze for an extra hour. But the wild party we call Halloween seems like the perfect way to usher in the period of lower electricity bills, eating and drinking comfortably outdoors, and getting into your car without suffering heat stroke. Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery will preview the season with its latest group show — and one of two yearly exhibits officially open to local participants — “Candy Apples and Razor Blades.” All pieces submitted are Halloween-themed, from the plush monsters and awesome bloodcurdling paintings to the “sweet” porcelain dolls displayed with creepy-cute coffins. The show's opening party will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the gallery, located at 4566 N. University Dr. in Lauderhill. Call 954-748-0181, or visit bearandbird.com. The exhibition runs through November 13. Admission is free.
Sat., Oct. 17, 7 p.m.; Oct. 18-Nov. 13, 2009
