Vickie Pierres new installation If You Win Me, Im Forever at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood evokes the romanticism of such grandiose design. Inspired by fantasy, Surrealism, and textile design, Pierre juxtaposes the decadence of ornate fixtures with an understated, muted color scheme. Years of collecting vintage books, dishware, and other source materials informs the installation, the chief components of which will include vintage Avon perfume bottles and Syroco sconces. The work employs a footloose femininity so unapologetic seemingly a contradiction as far as gender stereotypes go that it begs for deeper reflection on the connection between the male-dominated Surrealist art movement and the feminine quality of fantasy. Or, you can always skip the indecipherable bombast that is art history and just stare at the purty lights.
Check out Vickie Pierres installation during Fridays 6 p.m. opening reception at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, found at 1650 Harrison St. The reception costs $10, but admission to see the exhibit during regular hours only costs $7, and runs through June 7.
