Feminists, Unite!

Feminism is alive and well. Enjoy that Saturday at Norton Museum of Art (1451 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach) with the “RAW Symposium: Imagining Feminities.” From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the symposium will explore how women are represented in contemporary culture through the works of three scholars: Maud Levin, Maria Elena Buszek, and Aruna D’Souza.

Speaker number one: Maud Levin, author of Push Comes to Shove and other visual culture literary works, will kick off the event with a keynote address. Speaker number two: Maria Elena Buszek, author of Pin-Up Grrls, has written extensively about feminism and contemporary art and will be presenting her lecture titled “Personal, Political, Popular: Confronting Some Issues in Feminist Art History.”

Speaker number three: Aruna D’Souza will round out the series with her lecture titled “Occupy Femininity: The Image of the Female Protester in the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and Other Uprisings.” D’Souza is an experienced essayist, with her most famous piece, Modern Women: Women Artists in the Museum of Modern Art, having been published as a catalog by MoMA in 2010.

Each one of them will do a 30-minute talk, followed by a panel discussion. The symposium is free with museum admission, which is $12 for adults, $5 for students, and free for members and children 12 and under. Call 561-832-5196, or visit norton.org.
