Flair to the V-Day Affair

Get out the required black attire; there’s an

Anti-Valentine’s Party

to attend at 1310 Gallery in the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. “The commercialism and focus of the holiday,” says artist/host

Lisa Rockford

, “creates a very stereotypical view of women as gold-digging — i.e., that all we care about is the size of the diamond.” She’s stopping this notion, as she should, because we women care about more than that: like, neo-pop art by Lisa Rockford, music by Pocket of Lollipops, and complimentary food and drink. And this free event offers all that.

Tonight will also be the closing reception to Rockford’s solo show “Twist,” which deals with themes such as gender and relationships. Part of her exhibit is a collection of 35 paintings called the “Barbie Magic Reveal Series.” “The series began with imagery appropriated from Barbie activity books,” says Rockford. “When you hear the word Barbie, you may contemplate personal connections of femininity and masculinity, vanity, and insecurity.” So basically, she took images of the iconic Barbie and messed with them, distorted them, switched masculine and feminine segments, turning them into humorous — and possibly dark — representations. For example, in another series at the show, there’s a painting called Self-Defense in which an image from the film Jurassic Park is merged with a Barbie head and high heels. Of the painting, Rockford says: “I thought that the image really summed up stereotypical female rage.” Show starts at 8 p.m. Find 1310 Gallery at 1310 SW Second Court in Fort Lauderdale.
