Freaky Saturday

For those that haven’t yet been to Auteur Explosion — the monthly gathering of local artists, musicians, and filmmakers — you’re really missing out. The last one took place in June, and featured the following: A gold-painted cowboy convulsing and drooling on the dance floor as Timb Krueller’s Craven played on; a film called Don’t Smoke With Mark that told the chilling tale of a supernatural pot smoker notorious for bogarting joints; and a gaggle of deliciously beautiful women shedding their clothing for hoots and hollers inside a building that, at one time, was a Methodist church. In short, Auteur Explosion is the sort of off-kilter variety show where undeniably weird and freaky shit serves as entertainment. This month, winners of New Times’ Battle of the Bands, Afrobeta, will headline on the music front, while John Dell'Isola displays a collection of unconventional island instruments. Also, dancer the Jade Goddess will perform her blend of Tango and — get this — contortion, after which local short films The Road Not Taken, Anatomia, and Adeline will close out the night. Just grab $7 and head to Cinema Paradiso tonight at 9 (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Visit for more info.
