Question: What do chili, hunky firefighter calendars, and the fiery 1977 plane crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd have in common? Answer: All three are shown great reverence at the 11th Annual Firefighter and Paramedics Chili Cook-Off. See, true Skynyrd fans (here’s where you scream “Skeeenarrd!) know that Saturday marks the 30 year anniversary of the southern rock group’s demise – leaving an absence in all of us that can only be filled with large quantities of chili… and hunky firefighters. So the powers-that-be have decided to dedicate the festival’s musical portion to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Shout it: Skeeenarrd!), while raising funds for charity. Stay all day and enjoy live music by the Skynyrd (you know what to do) tribute act Nuthin’ Fancy, along with three other tribute groups: The Allmost Brothers, The Fabulous Fleetwoods, and of course, ZZ Not.

So let’s add it up: more than 40 kinds of homemade chili, live music, and unlimited flirting with firefighters while they roll out their beefcake-award-winning 2008 calendar. Yep. It’s the perfect day. Check it out at Old School Square Cultural Arts Center (51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach) from noon to 9ish. Bring: $5 to get in (it all goes to charity), $15 for a calendar, and a lighter for “Freebird.” Call 561-279-0907.
