From Geek to Sheik

If there is anyone to commend (blame?) for the popularization of geek culture, it’s Kevin Smith. In Pre-Smith days, talking to your peers about general contractors on the unfinished Death Star would probably warrant a bit of ridicule, laughter, maybe even a black eye. Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy changed all that. (What came after? Not so much.) After his seminal films, everything changed for geeks: They never had to bring their mothers to prom again (instead, they were taking Shannon Doherty), and lesbians all over were falling head over heels for any cat sporting a Bluntman comic (hey, it worked for Ben Affleck).

Now you can hear your favorite dick and fart jokes all over again, because tonight at 7 p.m., Undergrounds Coffeehaus (2743 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) will host a Kevin Smith Movie Night. Feel free to talk geek all night long as you reminisce with your loved one about your favorite lines, including the venue appropriate “What do you mean there’s no ice? You mean I have to drink this coffee hot?” (Don’t worry; there is ice.) Call 954-630-1900.
