Get Real

You can only see a handful of Lichtenstein and Warhol knock-offs before you start demanding answers: Where is pop art going? Does it still exist? Has it, uhm, popped forever? Maybe you need to have a fling with Photorealism, Pop Art’s kid sister, and see if she’s got what you’re (artistically) longing for.

At “Shock of the Real: Photorealism Revisited,” the latest addition to the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s collections, you’ll stare, awestruck, at art imitating life. Taken from photographs, the images are recreated onto canvas in obsessively accurate detail, blurring the line between what is, and what isn’t real. If you’ve got a penchant for all things pastry, spend some time salivating over Audrey Flack’s 1974 acrylic on canvas, Strawberry Tart Supreme. Count the floors of the auto mall reflecting on the Chrysler’s hood in Richard Estes’ 1969 oil painting NYC Parking Lot. But most of all, wonder who has both the talent and dedication to render a mirrored version of another medium. It’s bizarre, beautiful, and real.

Visit the Boca Raton Museum of Art at 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. “Shock of the Real” runs through March 11th. Tickets range $6 to $18. Call 561-392-2500, or visit
