Ha'i Times

Holiday soirees take their toll. Sure, it's fun to put new twists on tradition, but there are only so many goth Santas, games of Hannukah pong, and New Year's Eve raves you can take before your lifeforce starts to wane. That easy-peasy fantasy world in which your parents grew up can, in fact, start sounding pretty damn good. So this year, when the burnout sets in, find out what mom and dad were waxing nostalgic about by getting all gussied up to catch a performance of South Pacific. (No, donning a dickey and watching the Facts Of Life episode in which Tootie sings "I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" on TV Land doesn't count).

Sure, South Pacific’s a musical, and it's a romance to boot. But it was also ahead of its time, won all 10 Tony Awards for which it was nominated when it premiered in 1949. How could it not, with tunes like "There Is Nothing Like A Dame," "Bloody Mary," and, of course, "Bali Ha'i"? Lucky you, the 2008 Broadway revival that won another 7 Tony Awards is on the road and hits the Kravis Center (701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach) from January 5th through the 10th. With tickets starting at just 30 bucks, there may be no better way to cleanse your experience palate before the Easter bondage-bunny parties start up. Call 561-832-7469, or visit kravis.org.
