Happy Septembers

Should funerals be somber remembrances or cheerful celebrations of life? Traditional funeral versus jazz funeral. If you prefer the latter, join the artist-run collective 1310 Gallery (1310 SW Second Court, Fort Lauderdale) from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday for the opening of “Love Thy Liberty.” Thirty-three South Florida artists, including curator Lisa Rockford, will try to lighten the mood that darkens September (because of 9/11) with a message of love and creativity. Cats will reach out with heart-shaped paws, varied depictions celebrate the female form, and half-hawk, half-bull men flex for the moon at this art show. More important, it’ll be a break from the sad memories of the September 11 attacks that sometimes become pervasive. Artists featured include Vena Paylo, Kristin Reilly, Kristie Stephenson, and Herbert Hofer. Organizers will also display experimental films found on thefemmebots.com.

The exhibit will be on view by appointment until October 8, with a closing reception the last night from 7 to 10 p.m. Visit sailboatbendartists.com, or call 954-729-5794.
Fri., Sept. 24, 7 p.m., 2010
