Have a Beautiful One Night Stand

Sure, you’ve left your mark on a few hotel rooms. How could you not? These spaces become your temporary residences, so naturally you customize them: Your toothbrush is just right of the sink, your condoms are on the Bible. Whatever it takes to make that rented room feel more like home. But consider this: Even if you trashed your last suite like an honorary member of Spinal Tap, its next visitor will never know. All evidence of your stay is wiped clean; beds are redressed, smudges polished away, mints placed neatly on the pillows. The impacts on these spaces are brief, fleeting, and tonight during Showtel – a one night gallery/hotel installation showcase – they will also be beautiful.

Each of Showtel’s 21 participating artists will design his or her own room in the lovely Hotel Biba (320 Belvedere Rd., West Palm Beach). Since each has carte blanche regarding the choice of medium, you’ll see puppets, birds, video reels, performance art, and even an underwater bedroom installed in the hotel pool. But what else would you expect from Showtel? Now in its sixth go, this delightfully quirky feat of installation art has never let you down. Just don’t get too attached to your favorite room; it won’t be there tomorrow. $7 gets you entry plus a cocktail and program. The show runs from 6 to 11 p.m. Call 561-832-0094, or visit www.showtel.org.
