It's Like Carrie, But For Dudes

Stanley Coopersmith didn’t set out to do bad things, he wanted to go unnoticed — or better, to fit in. But his classmates at the academy had other ideas, all of which involved pushing him right against sanity’s edge. What’s a displaced, tormented orphan to do? In the grindhouse jam Evilspeak, there is only one, obvious solution: Stanley must utilize early ‘80s DOS coding on a giant computer to summon the spirits of a satanic cult, then they can guide him in destroying the school and its inhabitants. Of course!

The gritty tale shows tonight at Cinema Paradiso, and is the latest installment of FLIFF’s Grindhouse Film Series - a monthly endeavor which portals you through time, back to a nearly pre-BetaMax era when slasher flicks mind-melded with extraterrestrial phenomenon. It’s a time for celebrating low-brow entertainment the way it was intended: with booze in one hand and popcorn in the other.

Cinema Paradiso is located at 503 SE Sixth Street in Fort Lauderdale. Showtime is from 6 to 8 p.m. and is followed by a Q and A with Irv Goodnoff, Evilspeak’s cinematographer. Tickets cost $5; buy ‘em at fliff.com.
