A lot can happen in 24 hours: You can drive from South Florida to New York City, win a sleep deprivation contest, or even create a 24-page comic book. Granted, it would be quite a feat to write, draw, and ink one page-per-hour of paneled cartooning, but there’s nothing like a challenge to get the creative juices flowing. And that’s the impetus behind 24-Hour Comics Day. The festival, held each year in comic shops across the globe, calls artists both professional and amateur to hunker down with friends and draw their hearts out – the idea being that pressure and time will lead them to create something extraordinary. In years past, comic legends such as Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and Steve Bissette (Swamp Thing) have participated, only to have their 24-pieces published alongside amateur work in Scott McCloud’s anthology, 24 Hour Comics. And this year your name could be right alongside theirs. Simply head to War and Pieces Comic Shop (3716 Davie Rd., Davie) this Saturday at 10 a.m., and sketch till Sunday. Fear not, fellow believers: there will be plenty of caffeinated beverages on hand, comic boards for sale, and grub courtesy of Char-Hut to keep you going. Call 954-797-6080.
