There’s hardly a day that relies more on gender stereotypes than Valentine’s Day. Lingerie, flowers, and expensive dinner tabs, we’re told, make Cupid’s aim a sure thing. But thankfully, Broward’s foremost indie gallery, the Bubble, will offer an alternative to the endless dinner specials and pink balloons that ostensibly appeal to women this time of year. Instead, the all-female art show “The Trouble With Girls,” in its second year at the gallery, will celebrate XX-chromosomes with much more than stuffed animals and Hallmark platitudes — though there will be some lingerie, compliments of the burlesque dancers and curator Janette Valentine’s photography. “Trouble With Girls” will present work from more than 20 local women artists and vendors, including crafts, paintings, photography, live music, and burlesque, among others. But make sure to arrive early to catch the Supa Fly Car Wash, which will feature XY performers Evan Rowe, Brady Newbill, Trav, and Garo Gallo (who are also part of a 2011 all-boy calendar, shot by Valentine) getting wet and maybe wild while they wash your car.

So if you want to treat your special lady friend to something special made by other special ladies (or to the ridiculous spectacle that involves male performers getting bubbly), bring some cash to scoop up the various artwork or handmade goods for sale. If you don’t think much of Hallmark-constructed holidays, come for an education in the diverse contributions of women in our local arts community.
