Good news, merfolk: the Marine Industry Association of South Florida's 32nd Annual Waterway Cleanup hits the waves this Saturday at 9 a.m., asking volunteers to help brighten Florida's most abundant natural resource at nearly 40 locations across Broward County. Last year's cleanup had a stellar turnout of over 2000 aqua lovers, who together wrangled over 65 tons of trash and debris from Broward's waterways. The MIA hopes to eclipse those totals this year with the help of local surf shops like BC Surf & Sport in Fort Lauderdale, the Surfrider Foundation, and a very special new sponsor, Pompano Beach's own ARK Paddleboards. ARK specializes in stand-up paddleboards, a 12-foot-long board designed to glide across the water without the need for waves. Because of their stability, these paddleboards can be used for everything from surfing to spear fishing to canoeing down rivers and canals. On Saturday, the stand-up paddleboard fleet will be outfitted with garbage-collecting paddles and onboard trash cans, which can be emptied into the larger garbage boats that will follow volunteers throughout the day.

The ARK crew will be at George English Park, found at 1101 Bayview Dr. in Fort Lauderdale, but more localized cleanup sites can be found at waterwaycleanup.org. An afterparty with food and drink will be held at 2 p.m. at John U. Lloyd Park, located at 6503 N. Ocean Dr. in Dania.
