More than 2500 years ago, dedicated (and flexible) members of Chinas working class developed a new art form: acrobatics. They took discarded wheel wells, decorative pottery, and emblematic tapestries, then reclaimed and resurrected them as performers props while entertaining the masses. Emperors soon noticed the energetic spectacle taking shape within the country. They plucked the acrobats out of their villages and delivered them to the countrys inner sanctum: the palace. There, performances evolved into regal productions, complete with shattering music, elaborate costumes, and unparalleled athleticism.
The Golden Dragon Acrobats, who perform tonight at the Miramar Cultural Center (2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar), combine those historic threads and traditional props with a sense of lighthearted modernism. Dancers spin dozens of plates far above their heads with the ease of a child toting a bundle of balloons. Wheels morph into cog-like playgrounds; ladders grow human appendages; and feats of strength are performed with flawless poise. The Golden Dragons prove that a night out can provide jaw-dropping entertainment and bring history to life. Tonights performance is at 7, and tickets range $15 to $35.
