Our neighbors to the north, those wily Canadians, craft some pretty cool things. Canadian bacon, for example: Who doesnt like a slice on an egg sandwich? Hockey is also a fun and rewarding sport (thats our official line). Pamela Anderson? Now were talking. Its in this spirit that the Bear and Bird Gallery (upstairs at Tates Comics, 4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill) is holding an artistic tribute to all things Canadian called Made in Canada. Five Canuck artists will throw down on canvas, each bringing something unique to the table. Dave Barnes forms a collage of sorts out of nostalgic images and newspaper clippings, with the end result taking the shape of a mighty owl or a majestic moose. Lori Joy Smith evokes the innocence of childhood with her cartoon-y paintings of rosy-cheeked kids. Then there are Jason Pultzs impish characters, Rey Ortegas muted monsters, and Rosemary Travales colorful line art. Come by the opening reception at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and get treated to some homemade maple cotton candy maple being another of Canadas fine exports. Theres no cover, and DJ Tikku will be on hand to spin Canadian lounge, whatever that is. Call 954-748-0181, or visit www.bearandbird.com.
