Among the complaints that we hear every day, rarely do we get something like this: “I spend my days in a wire cage just bigger than my body. I’m full of scabs and sores, and I’m standing with cut feet... in my own shit.” It would really be a drag to hear what follows all the time: “My life will be like this until someone yanks me out of the cage by my throat and kills me.” So, fortunately (or unfortunately, depending upon how you look at it), the creatures with this and similar complaints can’t speak English. But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon how you look at it), lots of people who do speak English are more than willing to voice this complaint for these mistreated creatures — the animals who suffer and die in factory farms.

Fort Lauderdale Walk for Farm Animals will be an occasion for the area’s animal advocates to volunteer their voices and feet to raise awareness of the atrociousness of factory farms and the possibility of compassionate vegan living and to raise funds for Farm Sanctuary, an animal advocacy group. The hour-and-a-half walk and subsequent vegan munch session will also be a great occasion for animal-friendly networking. You may even learn how to make tofu taste OK. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at pavilions 1 and 2 at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park (3109 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Cost is $15 to $20. Call 561-635-3153, or visit walkforfarmanimals.org.
