Move Your Ass For a Good Cause

Regardless of your level of sloth or fitness, a 5K run is going to have some kind of effect on your heart. Today's second-annual Tunnel to Towers Fort Lauderdale 5K Run/Walk has a bonus in that it tugs at the heartstrings while quickening the pulse. Proceeds from the event benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which provides an array of resources to those -- like first responders -- who were injured or lost loved ones on 9/11 or in post-9/11 conflicts. Last year, the Fort Lauderdale race put more than $75,000 in the national nonprofit's coffers. Whether you're typically awake at the crack of dawn to go running or because you've just wrapped an all-night "Game of Thrones" bender, there's room for you at the starting line (or on the sidelines). In addition to the race, organizers have planned to bring in food trucks and family-friendly games plus other entertainment. Tunnels to Towers begins at 7:30 a.m. at Huizenga Plaza, located at 32 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The cost to participate in the run is $25 for adults and $15 for kids age 11 and younger. Advance registration, which is encouraged but not required, concludes at 11 p.m. Thursday, September 6. Call 954-532-8790, or visit tunneltotowersfortlauderdale5k.com.
