One of the Kings of Comedy

Not that it’s actually difficult to offend people, but there must be some unwritten rule that you’re not a true comic until you’ve stirred up some headline-worthy controversy. D.L. Hughley, one of the founding Kings of Comedy, was probably aware of this theory when he recently agreed to join the ladies of The View for a stint as a celebrity guest host. Pretty much all the View hosts have had their share of public floggings thanks to voicing their view. Just the other week, Hughley put the comedy routine aside but still managed to ruffle the feathers of the LGBT community, along with tenured host Sherri Sheperd, with their theory that “down low” gay black men are responsible for increased HIV rates among African-Americans.

Let that be a lesson in sticking to what you know best, which in Hughley’s case is getting laughs. Hughley will be rolling his comedy act into town this weekend (minus the sideshow of The View, unfortunately) with a three-night showing at the Improv Fort Lauderdale (5700 Seminole Way, Hollywood). Don’t forget your ID, because all shows are 21 and up, except for Saturday’s 11:15 p.m. show, which is 18 and up. Tickets cost $32 and can be purchased at symfonee.com/improv/ftl.
Fri., July 9, 8 & 10:30 p.m.; Sat., July 10, 7, 9 & 11:15 p.m.; Sun., July 11, 7 p.m., 2010
