Pinball Wizard

The two of you shared a unique relationship, one that your parents would never understand. That’s why you had to sneak around, meeting up at the arcade, “your special place,” each day after school (while your family thought you were studying.) It was there that the crowds would simply seem to turn mute and part, leaving only you and the object of your affections. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” inevitably piped in, the world slowed, and you clicked your quarters together, ready for a love/hate battle. C’mon pinball, show me what you got.

See, pinball is primal: man versus machine. And as a showcase piece of furniture, those long boxy devils are aesthetically pleasing and loaded with neat little tweaks in design. If your love affair with pinball has grown a bit hazy, rekindle the flame with a visit to the Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture’s new exhibit, “Pinball Palooza: The Art, The History, The Game.” It features info on the evolution of your favorite paddle-whacking pastime as well as an assemblage of vintage games to check out, and yes, even some to play. The Cornell is located within Old School Square Cultural Arts Center, at 51 N. Swinton Ave., in Delray Beach. Visit today between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and if you’re older than 12, expect to drop 6 bucks. Visit oldschool.org/exhibits.
