Proposition Gay Marriage

Not too many social concerns are as divisive as gay marriage, especially during election time. A homosexual couple wanting to solidify their union stirs up tons of debate, especially among the Republican base and marriage-equality advocates. With impeccable timing, Dustin Lance Black's groundbreaking play 8, which argues that marriage equality is a basic constitutional right, comes to Lake Worth Playhouse for a one-night performance on Friday. The Academy Award-winning screenwriter based the story on the actual June 2010 closing arguments of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. For those unfamiliar, the case concerned the federal constitutional challenge to California's Proposition 8, which took away same-sex marriage rights in California. The performance begins at 8 p.m., and the audience can expect to see how discrimination played out in a courtroom with controversial dialogue taken from the actual court tapes. A ticket to the show includes a preshow reception featuring food by Callaro's Steakhouse. An open discussion with the cast will follow the show. Tickets cost $40, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the theater, the Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center, and the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Lake Worth Playhouse is located at 713 Lake Ave. in Lake Worth. Call 561-586-6410, or visit
