Try as you might to avoid it, there comes a time in adulthood when you will absolutely break your parents’ hearts. For the supportive, rainbow-flag-waving parental unit in the Nicole Pandolfo play I Thought I Liked Girls, that moment comes when their young, single lesbian daughter comes home to tell them that the whole "tipping the velvet life" she had been leading was merely a phase. The play’s intentional script-flipping on the traditional coming-out story is totally refreshing, as are other offerings up for view at Girl Play, the Second Annual Lesbian Play Reading Festival, presented by the Women’s Theatre Project at the GLCC building (2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors). Eight plays under a lesbian theme will be performed each night with a "Best of the Fest" performance closing night. The show’s creators pored over 75 submissions, reading them aloud twice before selecting the final 16 to be performed this weekend. Girl Play starts at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday – a “Foreplay” hour starts each day with a meet and greet over the night’s signature cocktail — the Luscious Lesbian Martini. The readings last about two hours — and stick around for an art raffle to benefit the GLCC and the Women’s Theatre Project. Admission costs $15 each day.
