What's better than seeing alleged junkie pachyderms and ambiguously gay roommates on a kids TV show? Why, seeing those things live, of course! "Sesame Street Live 1-2-3... Imagine" opens at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) at 7 p.m. Thursday, with additional shows at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday and at 10:30 a.m. and 2 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Of course, we all know Sesame Street. The show's 91 Emmys set the all-time record. The way TV tends to go through shows like Kleenex these days, that record will probably remain an untouchable, right up there with Cy Young's 511 career wins and Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points in a game. And the kids just keep on coming.
In this latest edition of Sesame Street's live show, Samantha the mail carrier delivers postcards to the Sesame Street gang. But the Muppets are sad that they can't see their friends in person, so Sam shows them how they can travel the world through the power of imagination, giving a whole new meaning to the term "going postal." Letting Off Steam
Did you know there is an association called the Florida Live Steamers and Railroaders? It's true, and guess what? They're not just a bunch of 30-year-old men living in their parents' basements, eating Easy Mac, and diligently perfecting their small-scale model train sets. And they're not a bunch of grandfather types sporting overalls and red kerchiefs either. They get around. And they want you to hop on board for an event aptly titled "Chugga-Chugga Choo-Choo." Kids of all ages can pile on a model steam train, learn all about steam locomotives, and possibly discover the secret of stopping a train in time to save a beautiful woman tied to the tracks. Who knows? The boarding starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Tradewinds Park (3600 W. Sample Rd., Coconut Creek). Children 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Kids Get Theatrical
If you're tired of singing into a hairbrush, jumping on your bed, and dreaming of being famous when you get older, listen up. The Palm Beach Gardens Recreation Division offers a new youth drama program every Friday. The three divisions consist of TheatreTots, for kids ages 2-3, TheatrePlay, for ages 3-4, and TheatreKids, for ages 5-7, which offers kids more-challenging games, scripts, and improvisation. The interactive program takes place at Riverside Community Center (10170 Riverside Dr., Palm Beach Gardens).
