Shake What Your Mama Gave Ya

If you’ve ever had the strange desire to see a live reenactment of the Shakira-Danzig mash-up video, you should head over to the tenth annual tribal-fusion belly-dancing extravaganza better known as Spirit of the Tribes. Tribal fusion is belly dancing with multiple-personality disorder, taking cues from Bollywood, hip-hop, psychedelic rock, goth, and yes, even punk, among other styles. For $25 each, ladies and gentlemen (there are two male instructors) can take their pick of classes; teachers come from far-off and unlikely countries such as Holland and Japan. If you’d rather leave the hip-shaking to the professionals, nightly shows start at 7:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Auditorium (800 NE Eighth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets for shows can be purchased in advance for $30 via Ticketmaster.com or you can pay $35 at the door. And for those of you who just want to play dress-up, there will also be a free bazaar with vendors selling costumes, jewelry, and artisan crafts. For a detailed schedule and registration info, you can visit majanile.com/spirit10.html.
Fri., May 28, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., May 29, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., May 30, 7:30 p.m., 2010
